The Ambassador

BRIGADIER GENERAL ALHASSAN ABU (RTD)

Brigadier General Alhassan Abu (Rtd) is a distinguished Ghanaian military officer and diplomat with a long-standing career in the Ghana Armed Forces, rising to Brigadier General. Prior to his retirement, he transitioned to diplomacy, having served as a Defence, Military, Naval and Air Attaché (DMNAA) with the Embassy of Ghana in Washington DC from 2016 to 2020. He now serves as Ghana’s Ambassador to Côte d’Ivoire, reflecting his continued service to national interests beyond his military duties.

As a diplomat, his mission includes strengthening bilateral ties between Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire, enhancing political, economic, and cultural cooperation, and representing Ghana’s interests in regional and international matters.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in management and Psychology from the University of Ghana. He also holds a Master of Arts Degree in International Affairs and Diplomacy from the Legon Centre for International Affairs and Diplomacy (LECIAD), Ghana. Additionally, he is a graduate of the United States Army War College in Carlisle (Pennsylvania), where he obtained a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies.

During his illustrious career as a military officer, he held numerous high-profile appointments. Notably amongst them are Commanding Officer 3rd Battalion of Infantry in Sunyani, Commanding Officer United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) Ghanbatt 60, Directing Staff (Lecturer) at the Ghana Armed Forces Senior Command and Staff College, and the South African Command and Staff College in Pretoria. He also served as the Director Army Operations and Army Secretary. Additionally, he was the Chief Staff Officer at the Army Headquarters where he assisted the Chief of Army Staff (Army Commander) in the efficient and effective management of the Ghana Army. He also acted on a number of occasions as the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) in the absence of the substantive COAS.

After retirement from active military service, he continued to participate in military community activities including functions as guest of honour when called upon and encouraging retired personnel to share their knowledge and expertise with the younger generation. He is also an advocate for peace, security collaboration and intelligence sharing.

Brigadier General Alhassan Abu (Rtd) is married with children. He enjoys basketball, jogging and golf.
